When I first started seriously filling sketchbooks, I carried with me a heavy burden: perfectionism. Every page felt like a test. Every drawing had to be "good enough" to deserve space. Unsurprisingly, I froze. My sketchbook became a battleground rather than a sanctuary.

The turning point came when I embraced a truth that transformed my creative life: quantity precedes quality.

The only way to get better was to make more marks — lots of them. Good ones, bad ones, weird ones, joyful ones. I had to give myself permission to fill a page badly, to make a mistake and keep going.

It doesn’t matter if you're working traditionally with pen, pencil, or watercolor, or digitally with apps like Procreate (yes, your iPad can absolutely be a sketchbook!). The spirit is the same: show up, explore, mess up, learn, repeat.

Here’s how to embrace your sketchbook every day:

• Lower the stakes. Not every page needs to be beautiful. None of them do, actually.

• Set small goals. A five-minute doodle counts. A messy color swatch exploration counts.

• Celebrate mistakes. Every "wrong" line is a lesson learned.
